BACK TO BACK “Chromatics” by Stig De Block

Belgian born Stig De Block (Antwerp - LA - NYC) is a (fine-art) photographer known for his straight forward process and use of bold colors. His story driven approach is a constant interaction between the everyday real and layers of his imagination. With a strong interest in subcultures, his images reflect a contemporary realm of authentic and explicit beauty. 

In 2022 he premiered his debut project Back to Back From Backyard to Boulevard. An intimate portrait on the low rider community in Los Angeles uniting different walks of life through a shared passion and love for low rider cars. Before going on show Photobook Café is proud to present an exclusive preview of Stig’s 2nd installment titled BACK TO BACK “Chromatics” on April 6th. 

Chromatics will feature artworks that were never shown before, until now. Inspired by Thump Records graphics and foremost chrome finishing on lowrider cars, Chromatics introduces Stig’s first digital paintings. 

He bends the original lighting source and adds colours that are inherent to the chrome hue reflection palette. Alike existing old timer cars, he starts from an existing canvas (cfr: his own archive). With this series Stig taps in to the freedom state of mind of a car owner, building and painting his dream car. Back to Back exhibited in multiple group and solo shows, artist talks, lectures, fine-art and book fairs, Stig was a guest in (inter)national radio shows and podcasts. He is a nominated finalist at Rencontres d’Arles Photography Fair 2023. In December 2023 he exhibited this project during Art Basel with a solo show at Scope x Photo Basel Miami.
